None but top-paid actors can afford to say no if asked to smoke in a movie. Here are 10 questions to ask the ones who can:
1. Was it your idea? Or did someone suggest it was your idea?
2. Do you feel you have the right to refuse to smoke on screen?
3. Are you a smoker in real life? Are you ready to quit?
4. Does it feel odd to endorse a brand and get nothing for it? Is someone else making a killing? Has anyone ever told you, “That’s the way it is”?
5. Do you know how many stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame were killed by tobacco?
6. If you have younger brothers or sisters, would you want them to smoke?
7. Have you read the insider documents on smoking in movies? Do you know how cynically tobacco companies talk about actors?
8. However much you care about other social issues, did you know you can save more lives and avert more misery by simply not smoking on screen?
9. Did you know lung cancer kills more American women than breast cancer? Did you know Hollywood popularized smoking for women?
10. Did you know that U.S. movies recruit enough teen smokers every year to replace every adult smoker killed by tobacco?
